This Kannon Temple was built in 1908 by Gochiku Nakabayashi, who laid the foundation for modern day calligraphy. Gochiku was born in 1827 in Ogi town, Ogi city. He entered the domain school, Kojokan, at the age of 15, and travelled to Edo (modern day Tokyo) at the age of 18 for further study. He studied calligraphy and was apparently involved in domain politics after returning to his hometown. In 1871 he dedicated himself to studying calligraphy in Nagasaki, then travelled to China in 1882 for further research into calligraphy, which he continued after returning and completed the Gochiku Art. It is certainly no overstatement to say he dedicated his life to calligraphy. Gochiku passed away at the age of 87 in Mikkatsuki town, Ogi city, but many people still visit Kannon Temple to remember him by gazing upon his statue and personal effects kept here.
