"Shichimenso" Yard

'Shichimenso' Yard In late autumn, the Ariake Sea coastline is covered in a red carpet of Shichimenso, a member of the Chenopodiaceae family, which is an annual plant that grows between 20 and 40 cm in height. Shichimenso is of a unique shape, with leaves resembling flowers stretching out in the shape of rods. It is covered in water when at high tide, then becomes part of the mud flat at low time, not to mention it only grows where there is minimal wind swell and current. Due to being a plant which can tolerate saltwater, Shichimenso is also known as a halophyte. It is the only plant of its kind that changes color and Emperor Showa was said to be very interested in this special trait and the plant's beautiful red-purple color. The kanji characters of the name "Shichimenso" mean "The Grass of 7 Faces". The way in which it changes color just like the mountains in autumn is one of the charming sights the Ariake Sea has to offer. The best spot for viewing Shichimenso is from Higatayoka Park in Higashiyoka town.
