The origins of Ogi Yokan are unclear, however it was apparently already known of in the Meiji Period under the name of Sakura Yokan. There are stories that say, amongst the food supplies sent to the soldiers fighting in the Japanese-Sino War, Ogi Yokan was the only food not to lose its flavor while other food couldn't be prevented from spoiling. Since then, Ogi Yokan has become famous throughout Japan. Its ingredients include the azuki red bean, sugar, agar, powdered green tea, etc. After dissolving the agar in water, sugar is added, followed by red bean paste. This mixture is boiled then cooled to form the yokan.
