Taku Confucian Temple

Taku Confucian Temple

Taku Confucian Temple Taku Seibyo temple was built in 1708 to worship the Chinese saint, Confucius, who was the founder of Confucianism. It was built by Taku Domain's 4th generation lord, Shigefumi Taku, who had a liking for academic studies, in particular Confucianism. Taku Seibyo temple is the oldest Confucian temple still standing in Japan. The inside of the temple features Chinese-style carvings of kirin (mythical dragon), phoenix, dragon turtle and Qi Long (a mythical fish dragon). These carvings are made even more gorgeous with vermilion lacquering. The temple also features statues of Confucius and the 4 guardians. These are housed within an octagonal case called a Seigan. This Seigan of Seibyo is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The inside of the temple is only accessible to the public during the Sekisai festivals in spring and autumn.
Sekisai is a festival which has been carried out since the temple was first built, and is performed faithfully in accordance with the old ways. Gagaku, a form of ancient Chinese music, is played as Taku's mayor and high school teachers, accompanied by the festival leader, make offerings to Confucius. The containers, etc. used on this occasion are similar to those used in ancient China, however Taku is said to be the only place in Japan to use flags known as Ryuki or "Dragon Flags".
The Taku Seibyo exhibition hall adjacent to the temple exhibits the garments, etc. used in the Sekisai festivals.
