Saga Nishiki and Kashima Nishiki Textile

Saga Nishiki and Kashima Nishiki Textile The beauty of Kashima Nishiki and Saga Nishiki appeals to people in a variety of forms, such as handbags, wallets and decorative strings for kimonos.
It is said that this brocading method was invented in the later half of the Edo Period, when Lady Kashima Nabeshima lay on her sickbed and thought up the idea while looking at the weaving on the ceiling. At first, this style was taught to the daughters of samurai families in Saga, Ogi, Kashima and so on. It was gradually improved through creative ideas until, ultimately, the modern day method was established. Its delicate and splendid geometric pattern consists of silk as the weft yarn, and gold, silver or lacquer as the warp yarn. In the Meiji Period, Kashima and Saga Nishiki were praised at the Japan-British Exhibition held in England, and remain highly regarded around the world today as the ultimate of Japanese hand weaving.
