Takeo Hot Springs

Takeo Hot Springs

Takeo Hot Springs Takeo Onsen is an ancient hot spring described in "Hizen Fudoki" (description of the culture and climate of Hizen province) as being "a hot spring in the west of the province surrounded in rough terrain and off the beaten path". Takeo Onsen dates back 1600 or so years, when it is said Empress Jingu poked the ground with the tip of a spear, from which hot water sprang out. For that reason, Takeo Onsen is also known as "Tsukasaki Onsen" (Spear Tip Hot Springs). The symbol of Takeo Onsen is the red-coated Romon (two-storied gate) which evokes the feeling of Ryugu-jo. This gate was designed in 1914 by Kingo Tatsuno, who was from Karatsu city, Saga prefecture, and famous for designing Tokyo Station, which was made from red brick. Takeo Onsen's temperature varies between 18 and 52 degrees C. It is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring, and its water feels soft on the skin. The water is clear and is said to be extremely effective in relieving fatigue. Many famous people such as lord of the Saga Domain, Musashi Miyamoto and Philipp Franz von Siebold are said to have bathed here. There is a public bathing area behind the Romon. Here visitors can savor a nostalgic atmosphere as this area was privatized during the Meiji Period. Visitors can enjoy various different baths such as "Motoyu" and "Horaiyu" in the public area, as well as "Karouyu" and "Tonosamayu" , etc. in the private bathing areas. There is also a hot spring town close by.
