Tideland Observation House

Tideland Observation House Ariake Sea has the largest tidal flat in Japan. Kashima's Higata Tenbokan is a roadside stop where you can savor spectacular views of the Ariake Sea. The viewing corner has a pair of 30-power binoculars, making it possible to observe wild birds and Bluespotted Mud Hoppers. These mud hoppers are particularly interesting to observe in their breeding season between June and August, as they jump about here and there.
Inside the Tenbokan there are fish and shellfish of Ariake Sea on display, and visitors can view approximately 30 species, including the endangered Roughskin Sculpin. There is even a touch pool where it is possible to touch Bluespotted Mud Hoppers, starfish and so on, making it a popular place for children and tourists.
The neighboring agricultural and marine produce market, Senja-ichi, sells the bounty of the sea and mountains, including Ariake Nori seaweed, famous throughout Japan and locally-grown mandarins. There is even equipment such as mud flat skies used in Bluespotted Mud Hopper fishing available to hire for those who wish to play in the tidal flat of Ariake Sea. Play in the mud to your heart's content free of worry, because there are hot showers available to clean off afterwards!
