Keiran Rice Cake

Keiran Rice Cake

Keiran Rice Cake Keiran is a sweet made from red bean paste wrapped in a thin layer of mochi made from the finely-ground powder of rice grown locally in Hamatama town. It has been loved by many over the centuries for its light, elegant taste. Keiran is said to have been offered to Hideyoshi Toyotomi by the locals when he visited Suwa Shrine to pray for victory at war upon dispatch of troops to the Korean Peninsula. "Keiran" apparently means to "not return" (keeran) until the war has been won. There are many stores in Hamatama town of Karatsu city which sell keiran and each have their own unique taste. There is mugwort flavor, shiso leaf flavor and more.
