Naorai Feast

Naorai Feast

Naorai Feast Naorai Cuisine is an absolutely essential part of the Karatsu Kunchi festival.
This cuisine is eaten after the festival in order to "Naoriai" (heal together - a play on words with "Naorai") and hence return to normal. Full of rustic flavors, this traditional food made with fresh seafood from the Genkai Sea, was once made by hand in people's homes, but recently this custom is disappearing. If you make a request in advance, it is possible to taste authentic Naorai Cuisine at hotels in Karatsu city even when the Karatsu Kunchi festival is not being held.
"Naorai" originally meant to partake in offerings of food together with the gods however now it refers to getting together with other participants and having a banquet after holy rituals. Food offered to gods include both raw and stewed foods. Nowadays, the former is the most common, however the latter was originally more common, and on the Higashimatsuura Peninsula this was called "Nourya" and stewed food such as mochi rice cake and imonoko were offered as a welcoming like kadomatsu and Usuyasumi.
